Coconut Oil

The use of coconut oil is not a recent practice it has been used in the preparation of meals, in skin care and also hair care.

Information from Organic facts states that, Coconut oil is one of the best natural nutrition for hair. It helps in healthy growth of hair providing them a shiny complexion. Regular massage of the head with coconut oil ensures that your scalp is free of dandruff, lice, and lice eggs, even if your scalp is dry. Coconut oil is extensively used in the Indian sub-continent for hair care. Most of the people in these countries apply coconut oil on their hair daily after bathing. It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. It is therefore used as hair care oil and used in manufacturing various conditioners, and dandruff relief creams. Coconut oil is normally applied topically for hair care.

Also according to Hairlicious:

"Since coconut oil is able to bind to the natural protein structure of the hair, this helps the hair retain its natural moisture content and reinforces the hair fiber, making it stronger.

This form of protection helps preserve the cuticle layer and keep it in tact, thus allowing the cuticle to remain closed and hold on to moisture. In addition, it smooths raised cuticles reducing tangles, enhancing shine, and softness. Only use a finger tip amount, nothing more, or your hair may feel stiff.

Retaining moisture and lowering the pH level of your products (4.5 level) is key in eliminating porosity issues.

Coconut oil's ability to prevent protein loss and reduce hair porosity makes it valuable for those who relax, color, blow dry, brush hard, sun exposure, and regularly flat iron their hair."

Coconut is one of my favourite oils: I observe when I was consistently using it in my hair regime my hair was very strong. I adds incredible shine, make the hair soft especially if used for a prepoo and it adds that extra kick to deep conditioners. However, I only use oils for sealing in the moisture and no longer in my deep conditioning (DC) mixes. Coconut oil is packed with fortifying fatty acids and due to it's chemical composition coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft and reduces protein loss. In other words through conditioning coconut oil strengthens the hair strands which may result in stronger hair. Stronger hair will be able to withstand manipulation without breaking easily and stronger hair will be able to retain its length with the proper care. In the extract above it says to use a finger tip above; however, I use alot more than that so to each his own I say.

Its overall benefits:

  • Strengthens the hair cuticles
  • Adds shine
  • Aids in moisture retention
  • Smooths raises cuticles
  • Reduce hair porosity
  • Protects the hair in sun exposure
